Colleen Widrick, RCSD School No. 17

- Colleen Widrick was nominated by a young man who used only three words in his letter to News 8. But he hit the nail on the head when it came to describing her.

Mrs. Widrick has known Raemond Haughton since he was a 3rd grader. He is in the 7th grade now and asked us to surprise his favorite teacher. Principal Ralph Spezio helped by calling Mrs. Widrick to her classroom door.

"Oh my gosh, this is amazing; oh my goodness," she exclaimed as we surprised her.

"Why did you write us to nominated her for a Golden Apple," I asked Raemond.

"Because she's an awesome teacher," he replied.

Colleen Widrick has been a Special Education teacher for 13 years.

"I love small group instruction. That's my key thing and I think helping students who are younger, more needy. My motto is love the unlovely, and that's my signature for my web page and I really believe that we have to love the unlovely sometimes," she said.

Her greatest reward is seeing students grow.

"I love it. All these kids have potential. All of them have the ability to soar and they will all go to college," she said.

Principal Spezio says Raemond made a good choice.

"They're becoming believers and that's what a good teacher does. They inspire the children. They make them believe anything is possible if they put their mind to it," he said.
