Slaughter Speaks Out On County LDC Investigation

- Congresswoman Louise Slaughter says she is not surprised by the arrests this week of four people connected to Monroe County local development corporations.

Slaughter made allegations of corruption during her congressional debate with County Executive Maggie Brooks, which aired live on News 8 in October 2012.

"The corruption issue is very important to me. I've worried about it for some time and I want to make a pledge to you right now that win, lose or withdrawal on next Tuesday, I'm not through with that," she said back then.

The longtime Democrat easily defeated Brooks and raised questions about the way Brooks ran county government throughout her campaign. Here is what Slaughter had to say about the LDC scandal.

"I was not going to let that go and I did want an investigation and certainly it's not finished yet," she said.

Brooks' husband, Bob Wiesner, is one of the four men facing charges for alleged bid-rigging of county contracts. On Wednesday, she defended the county's uses of LDCs but called for changes in oversight of the two in question. Democrats want her to step away from the investigation.

"I couldn't agree more. She should really recuse herself from it. What we always hear is 'I had no idea anything was going on there, but I will clean it up at once.' But that's just not going to work this time around," Slaughter said.

Wiesner's attorney, James Nobles, says the indictment is "inherently political," and that the real target is Brooks. He says it all started with Slaughter.

"It's a good think that it's happening," Slaughter said.

All four men are expected to be back in court on December 18th.
