The Charles Settlement House is a neighborhood anchor on Rochester's northwest side. Inside, the senior center is thriving, from the cafeteria to the craft room where volunteer Shelly Folwell teaches a group how to make Christmas pillows. Some are seniors with special needs. Shelly has their trust and confidence. "She's a very generous person," says Sister Lorraine Burns SSND, a fellow volunteer. "To give all of her time just working here, with these seniors, and she is very good working with them."
Shelly began volunteering years ago. After a house fire, the Charles Settlement House took her children to see Santa and bought them bicycles. She's repaid the kindness ever since.
