Doctors at UR Medical Center's Flaum Eye Institute say Femtosecond laser surgery is the future of  cataract removal.  A cataract is a very common eye condition among the elderly.  Cataract symptoms include yellowish blurry vision, and a sensitivity to light. Patients can also have difficulty seeing at night.
Previously, doctors would remove the cataract manually but the Flaum Institute now combines the laser and 3D imaging software for a more precise procedure.  Doctors say it's easier to perform, and above all else, safer for patients.

The technology has been around for several years in other parts of the county.  Flaum Eye Institute has had the equipment since mid February and performed several dozen surgeries so far.  They are first center in the Finger Lakes region to offer it.
