The Rochester Association of Performing Arts is opposed to the mayor's plan to build a new performing arts center on Main Street.
RAPA recently took over Kodak's Theatre on the Ridge.
"It's a beautiful facility. It has the biggest stage in town. It has all the assets that are needed in a theater complex," said RAPA head Jim Vollertsen. "It's the economics. can you spend $80 million, $100 million dollars to build a theater with another thousand seats?"
Theatre on the Ridge has just under 2,000 seats. The Rochester Broadway Theatre League wants a venue with 3,000 seats, saying that's what bigger shows require to work economically. RBTL maintains the Auditorium is inadequate. RBTL said it has looked at Theatre on the Ridge and there's no way major Broadway productions cannot be loaded into the facility. RAPA said it is fixing those issues.
Mayor Lovely Warren has asked the state for $100 million to fund a performing arts center at the Midtown site.
