Raising Awareness About Rochester's Homeless
When Sherlie Rios could no longer afford her apartment in the Bronx, she bounced around the country, living with extended family here and there before ending up in Rochester in January 2013. It was one of the hardest times of her life, she was pregnant and traveling with a 4-year-old. Sherlie found out about Rochester Area Interfaith Hospitality Network through welfare. RAIHN focuses on family homelessness and took Sherlie and Nayla in. Kim Hunt Uzelak, Director of Aftercare Programs for RAIHN follows up with some of the families, as some fall back into homelessness, she is there to make sure they land on their feet again. All Sherlie needed to stay on her feet was the thought of her children. Sherlie believes she ended up in Rochester and found RAIHN for a reason. She's going back to school to get her GED, and hopes to one day work with kids who have down syndrome, or help others by being an EMT.
