Sharlena Martinez says she thanks God everyday that she's still alive. "He spared my life and the attacker wasn't able to take it away from me," Sharlena said.
Just 25 days ago, a man attacked as Martinez and her young granddaughter returned to their home on Emerson street. “By the time I turned around he was on my back, and I was 'saying let it go,'” Sharlena exclaimed . “I'm like 'you are not getting my purse'," and he kept tussling with me, trying to take my purse from me.”
"While he was trying to take my purse from me, he was poking me at the same time, but it didn't hurt,” Sharlena said. “I didn't feel anything."
Her son Tyshon was watching tv upstairs when he heard his mother screaming. "Tyshon finally came to the door and he had a shovel because he saw the guy and, I think, I looked up and took my focus off my purse and that's when the guy was able to yank it," Sharlena said.
Martinez had been stabbed 17 times. The attacker got away with her purse. "I saw the blood and I'm like oh my god, I don't know what to do,” Tyshon Martinez said. My mind was going a mile a minute."
Martinez had 500 dollars in her purse when it was stolen. The money was for Tyshon who just started at R-I-T last week. Friends heard the news and started an online fundraiser to help Martinez with medical expenses, and college expenses for her son and daughter. "I am truly grateful,” Sharlena said. “Me, my sister and my mom are truly grateful to everyone that helped and reached out because I don't even know if I would had all the things that I needed if I didn't have the account they set up.”
As of now, police have not made any arrests in this case. Martinez says she still has nightmares about her attacker. "ever since this happened, it plays over and over and over again in my head,” Sharlena said. “It brought a fear of going outside and i don't want to live in fear."
She remains blessed with the support from her family and friends.
