Students in the Rochester city school district marked the beginning of summer vacation with a celebration of reading.  Books and totes were distributed to children in kindergarten through second grade.  Students will also be mailed books during the summer months.  The "summer reading fun" program is in its seventh year.  Fourteen Rochester schools are participating.

School officials say it's good to get kids in that reading habit.  School #34 Principal Carmine Peluso said, " Kids just need to have the books in their hands. they need to hear from their parents and sit and read with them.  It becomes a family activity and through reading that can be fun.  Reading has to be fun."

The program is part of a partnership between the school and the Center for Youth.
