Community members gathered this morning to take a stand against violence in their neighborhood.

A rally was held today in response to recent incidents of violence against immigrants in Jones Square Park.  Supporters held the rally in the same park where the violent incidents were first reported  Organizers said it was symbolic to hold the rally on a day when Americans celebrate their freedom.

"I was disturbed by the news of the conflict in this area," expressed Heide Parreneao of the Peace & Nonviolence Committee.  "We wanted to show that we can claim this place as a sacred place.  The people will feel welcome, and I thought it was appropriate we did it on July Fourth."

Yesterday, police, 911 operators, and interpreters met with Nepalese residents to help them interact with local emergency responders.
