The mayor's appearance was part of the school's guest reader program and its "Let's Pull Together Routine" which involves at least 30 minutes of positive attitudes.
School staff say this will help students have fun while learning to read. Quiana Rice, a teacher, said, "Our job is not to teach children to read, but to help them to enjoy reading so they will read more."
The Freedom Schools helped organize the event. The group provides summer learning in 29 states.
