Lawsuit Challenging Teacher Tenure Law Expected to Be Filed
A lawsuit challenging the state's teacher tenure law is expected to be filed today. A group called Partnership for Educational Justice is filing the suit in Albany. The group says the law makes it too expensive to fire bad teachers. Because of that, poor and minority children are hurt. Teacher groups say tenure is nothing more than a guarantee of fairness and due process. Under the law, teachers usually receive tenure after three years. Afterward they can't be fired without a disciplinary hearing or a settlement.
