Folks who witnessed the crash involving NASCAR champion Tony Stewart feel like they're still in a nightmare.
"It was surreal," said Elton Smith, eyewitness.
Smith of Rochester watched the tragedy that killed Kevin Ward unfold before his eyes.
"You could see the driver, running down the track. And then after Tony went by, he wasn't there. Um. It took a minute to organize what had just happened. And pretty much everyone was in shock," said Elton Smith, eyewitness.
Smith described a hush over the track when people realized Ward was dead.
"It took a few seconds to really understand what was going on. And then once I did, it was kind of a shock at that moment. Driving home last night from Canandaigua, I was like, did that really just happen? explained Smith.
Smith told News 8 Ward is well known in the go-kart community where Ward got his start. He said his friends who enjoy the go-kart sport are mourning Ward's loss.
