Batavia, NY (WROC) - When Batavia High School students return to school next month, there will be a new rule in place that's drawing some attention.  The school's new policy restricts students from carrying backpacks throughout the school day.  Principal Scott Wilson says the change comes about after reviewing safety procedures. He adds that there are other reasons for the change as well.

"It's an initiative to try and increase the health and safety of the building.  Backpacks traditionally can be cumbersome, tripping hazards in classrooms and computer labs.  Of course, they're also way a for kids to conceal things they aren't supposed to have in school," Wilson added.

Batavia's first day of school is September 4th.
