30th Anniversary of Shuttle Discovery's First Flight

August, 30th, 30 years ago, Space Shuttle Discovery launched for the first time.

It was the first shuttle launched into orbit after both the Challenger and Columbia disasters.  Its 39 missions came to represent the resilience of the US space program.

The shuttle was officially grounded in March, 2011. Now Discovery's mission is to help millions of Smithsonian Museum visitors learn about manned space flight.
