We are hearing from multiple sources Republicans have tapped Assemblyman Sean Hanna to run instead. He currently serves the 130th Assembly District. Democrats are wasting no time to name their own candidate. We have confirmed through our sources that Monroe County Legislator Ted O'Brien has been chosen to run for Democrats. O'Brien is currently the Monroe County Legislature Minority Leader.
Monroe County Republican Party Chair Bill Reilich said a lawsuit Alesi filed against a Perinton couple hurt him.
"He understood that he made a mistake and apologized for that, the lawsuit, and yet it still resonated with the voters. The voters still remember that and he wanted to make sure we had our best shot at having a Republican represent the district,' Reilich told News 8.
Jim Alesi has been a State Senator since 1996. Last year, he became the first Republican State Senator to announce his support for same sex marriage and he was one of four republicans in the Senate to vote for the new law. That cost him the support of the conservative base.
In regards to the lawsuit, Alesi sued a Perinton couple last year after he broke his leg falling down a ladder. The couple claims Alesi trespassed in their home that was under construction. Alesi later dropped the lawsuit and apologized.
Republicans and Democrats are making official announcements Thursday morning.
