New York Mayor-elect Bill De Blasio has named William Bratton as New York City's police commissioner. Bratton will return to the post after first holding it in the mid-90s. In the announcement Thursday, De Blasio called Bratton a proven crime fighter and said that he knows what it takes to keep the city safe. Bratton is credited with the largest crime reduction in the city's history, according to De Blasio.

Demonstrators outside a Manhattan McDonald's in Times Square took part in a nationwide protest of fast food workers Thursday. Workers sponsored a one-day strike in 100 cities across the country to demand higher wages. Workers are demanding the fast food restaurants pay them a $15 an hour wage.
