Veteran news personality Rich Funke is expected to announce a run for New York State Senate on Wednesday.

Funke is planning to challenge Democrat Ted O'Brien for the 55th District Senate seat in November. He will run on the Republican line. Funke recently retired after a long career at Rochester's NBC affiliate, WHEC-TV. This would be his first time in politics.

"Our schools have taken a big hit here in terms of state aid. We need to do a better job with that. We also need to do a better job in upstate New York making sure we get the state aid we need for the projects that are important to us; and to make sure that we get an equal share of that state aid," he said.

In a statement, Senator Ted O'Brien said "I'm proud of my record and am confident that the hard-working men and women of Monroe and Ontario counties will re-elect me this fall."
