Martin Abkowitz, 77, was just out for a walk around the neighborhood when he was hit and killed along Holt Road.
Cheryl Tobin, 65, is now in jail charged with vehicular manslaughter, DWI, and DWAI.
Webster Police say she had drugs and alcohol in her system when she veered off the road, hitting Abkowitz, a mailbox and several trees.
Abkowitz was a retired scientist who worked at Xerox for more than 30 years.
He also served as an physics adjunct professor at the University of Rochester for a short time.
He held 35 U.S. patents and his work is cited in more than 100 publications.
His wife, Rollie, told News 8 he was a lover of music, a part of the Chamber of Music Society, and could tell a piece from just two notes.
Abkowitz was less than a mile from home when he was hit.
He has two children, Pamina and David, and two grandchildren, Talia and Jonah. His wife hopes justice is served.
Police say their investigation is not over.
"We had our crash team out there taking measurements and other things; and the other thing we are asking for help with is anyone who saw anything during this crash at three-thirty, quarter to four. I know that we are actively looking for people who may have information," Lt. Joseph Rieger said.
Tobin is in jail on $50,000 bail. She has another court appearance in Webster on February 4.
