Alex White Criticizing Proposed Plan For Drug Free Zones
Green Party mayoral candidate Alex White is criticizing a plan to create drug free zones in Rochester. Under the plan, pitched by City Councilman Adam McFadden, the city would establish temporary drug free zones around Rochester. For a maximum of 120 hours, while the zone is in effect, police would be able to arrest anyone who is loitering in that zone. White says such a law would be unconstitutional. "Once again the city council is taking the easy way out with an enforcement effort that not only pointlessly harasses Rochesterians," he said, "but will cost millions of dollars and raise serious concerns about council's understanding of the 1st, 4th, 5th, and 14th amendment." White's opponent, Democratic City Council President Lovely Warren, says any plan to reduce drug crime merits the city's attention. The plan must be approved by city council.
