New York Minute: January 30th

- An apparent gas explosion on Staten Island has forced residents out into the cold. At least 18 homes along a three-block radius have been evacuated. Dozens of firefighters were called to the scene. Residents say they smelled gas before hearing an explosion at a nearby home. Two people were rushed to the hospital. One is in serious condition. They other is in stable.

How do you find the words to say thank you to the person who gave you a second chance at life? John Ciempa, 66, finally got to thank the man who provided him with life-saving bone marrow. He was diagnosed with MDS, a cancer of the bone marrow cells. In 2012, he received a bone marrow transplant from New York City firefighter Christopher Howard that turned his prognosis around. Howard made the donation in honor of his father and best friend, both firefighters killed in the 9/11 attacks.
