ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - A group of young readers and scholars were recognized at the Boys and Girls Club of Rochester Wednesday evening.
The students were commended for their dedication to reading with a Hollywood themed award ceremony. The kids who have excelled at homework throughout the school year were also rewarded.
According to the executive director of the Boys and Girls Club, Dwayne Mahoney, the group of 240 students have read more than 13,000 books since October of last year.
"Reading is the key to everything. When our kids are able to read at grade level and for some of our kids even above grade level, they're able to do almost anything they want to do," said Mahoney. "Math, concept problems. They're just more articulate, more involved."
The awards were followed by a celebratory dinner for club members, their families, program volunteers, and supporters.
