Police identify parole officer killed in officer-involved shooting

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - A 48-year-old off-duty New York State Parole officer was killed in an officer-involved shooting at the Pinnacle North Apartments in Canandaigua Wednesday.

During Thursday's press conference regarding the incident, police said the parole supervisor wanted to check the welfare of Sandra Guardiola, the parole officer, who lived in the apartment complex.

Guardiola did not answer the door. At 4:29 p.m., the police officer was let in to Guardiola's apartment by the apartment manager.

"At about 4:31 p.m., the Canandaigua police officer radioed to 911 that shots were fired and additional units immediately responded to the scene," Chief Hedworth said.

Police said additional details regarding the incident will not be released until the investigation is complete.

"For us to say someone fired first or someone fired at all," First Assistant District Attorney Jim Ritts said. "It's too premature to say that. There's still work to be done."

Guardiola had been with the department since May 2015. The police officer, whose name has not released, is a 15-year veteran of the Canandaigua Police Department. The police officer is on paid administrative leave until the investigation is complete.

Police will not confirm who shot first or if more than one person fired a weapon. However, in an email from Pinnacle North Apartments to its residents, it states: "the police officer was speaking to the resident when a weapon was fired at the officer; who fired back."

An autopsy will be conducted on Friday.

News 8 will provide the latest information as it becomes available.
