Used devices assist Hurricane Maria Victims

Don't throw away those old gadgets

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) - Like many us, it's not uncommon to have a broken IPhone or Android laying around the house. These old and used devices are worth more than you think. A local company says these devices could help hurricane victims in need.

The heart of downtown Rochester was nothing short of Puerto Rican pride. The community and local businesses came out to support families and friends of those devastated by Hurricane Maria.

Yolanda Culver with ROC Relief says, "They desperately needs water, hygiene, and canned goods " Her organization like others are partnering with the Red Cross.

However, one organization is not asking for your typical donations. "This cell phone here that might be in your home is worth $5 but it's worth nothing to you. Your never going to use it again your kids play with it." Jaime Laureano said. Laureano runs Generosity Tech out of Brockport.

His company collects cell phones, IPads  or devices consumers are no longer using. These collected devices can be refurbished for resale or recycled and sold to manufacturers. "We break it down to commodity and we break it down to the actual minerals and we send that out to companies that are looking to source their minerals responsibly." Laureano said.

Laureano encourages the community to visit his website at  https://www.generosity.tech/hurricane-maria-relief

He tells News 8, "The average person that can get 3 or 4 cell phones in it is an average of $50 donation and that money is going to the Red Cross and to other donations the consumer chooses."

As of now Generosity Tech is working with six charities to help relief efforts in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean Islands.
