Trump approves disaster declaration for areas impacted by flooding

Monroe and Cayuga counties are not on the list

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - Federal funding is available for some areas by lake flooding earlier this year.

President Donald Trump declared that a major disaster exists in New York State to help areas affected by flooding from May 2 to August 6. Federal funding is available to eligible state and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations who were affected in the counties of Jefferson, Niagara, Orleans, Oswego, St. Lawrence, and Wayne.

Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich says they were in the application.

"There may be some missing information or maybe something that wasn't sent in correctly," said Reilich.

The Town of Greece spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on overtime, fuel for pumps, roads, and sewage, so getting overlooked was a shock to Reilich.

"I was a little surprised knowing the governor has submitted the counties to the federal government, knowing the governor had been here in our town I believe (on) three occasions," said Reilich.

In a statement, Congressman Chris Collins commended Trump for "approving the disaster declaration for flooding along the Lake Ontario shoreline" and said he would continue to push for Monroe County to be included in the declaration.

Monroe County representative Jesse Sleezer said the county's eligibility for FEMA assistance is currently under review.

We have been informed by representatives for the White House, Senator Schumer, and Congressman Collins that Monroe County’s eligibility for FEMA assistance is under review. We appreciate the continued support pledged by the Senator, the Congressman, and others in our federal Delegation to deliver a disaster relief declaration that would provide fair funding for impacted property in Monroe County.

Sen. Charles Schumer said he's also going to keep the pressure on until funding is secure for Monroe and Cayuga counties.

I am pleased FEMA heeded our calls by agreeing to help affected communities; rest assured I will keep pushing to get the same designation and support for Monroe and Cayuga so that all counties affected by Lake Ontario’s high waters get the funding they need and deserve to get back on their feet.

Sen. Pam Helming released the following statement:

The issuance of this declaration is a huge win for the communities I represent that have been devastated by the major flooding disaster this year. It will allow the federal government to provide much-needed aid to New York and our local governments. I urge the Trump Administration to quickly appoint new IJC commissioners who will repeal Plan 2014 and fight for local homeowners and small businesses along Lake Ontario’s southern shore.
