Tom Petty remembered by fans

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - Music legend Tom Petty died Monday in Los Angeles, his longtime manager confirmed shortly before midnight.

Petty, 66, suffered cardiac arrest in his home in Malibu, California and was rushed to UCLA Medical Center, but could not be revived.

News 8 spoke with John Covach, the director of the Institute for Popular Music at the University of Rochester, about what this loss means for the music world.

"I think he'll be seen as one of the most important artists in the period from the late 70s through the year 2000," Covach said. "That dedication to simplicity to his music -- the song is the important thing, the arrangement need to be tasteful but not draw attention-- really became a model for a lot of other musicians who admired his music and modeled their music on his."

Covach added that the department plans to dedicate their show on Oct. 21 to Petty.
