Suspect arraigned after being shot by intended robbery victim Friday

Would-be victim was licensed firearm owner

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - UPDATE: 

Rochester Police have identified the suspect from the attempted robbery Friday night.

Negus J. DeSouza, 22, of Rochester was arraigned at the hospital Monday afternoon on the following charges: 

Attempted Robbery in the First Degree,  Assault in the First Degree, Criminal Use of a Firearm in the Second, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree and Resisting Arrest in the Second Degree.

The judge has also ordered a no contact orders of protection.

Rochester Police say a robbery suspect was shot after an exchange of gunfire with his would-be

victim.

Investigators responded to a call on the 300 block of Sixth Street just after 10 Friday night.   A man was working on repairs outside a home when he was confronted by a suspect threatening him with a gun.   During the confrontation, gunfire was exchanged and the suspect was struck.   He ran away and was later dropped off at Rochester General Hospital with at least one gunshot wound to the lower body.  

The man who was threatened was a licensed firearm owner and was not hit.  

The suspect remains under guard in the hospital where he is awaiting charges pending the results of the investigation.
