Steuben County man found guilty of burning friend to death

BATH, N.Y. (WETM-TV/WROC-TV) - A Steuben County man has been found guilty of burning his friend to death to collect insurance money.

Late Friday afternoon, a Steuben County jury found 45-year-old Joseph Meyers, of Wayland, guilty of first degree murder in the 2016 arson killing of 60-year-old David O'Dell. 

The verdict was returned after just three hours of deliberations. More than 30 witnesses testified during the three week trial. 

Meyers showed no emotion as the verdict was read. He was taken to the Steuben County jail.

Meyers faces a possible life sentence.

Meyers is scheduled to be sentenced is on June 19. 

His wife, Iryn Meyers, also faces charges in this case. Iryn's trial is set to begin on July 5.
