Sheriff-elect Todd Baxter talks win

Deputies a top priority

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - The Monroe County Sheriff's Office will soon be under new leadership. Republican incumbent Patrick O'Flynn was running for a fifth term in office, but voters denied him that opportunity.

Democratic candidate Todd Baxter won handily, with 56 percent of the vote. It's a huge prize for the local Democratic Party, which has struggled in some recent high-profile elections.

Sheriff-elect Baxter stopped by News 8 at Sunrise to talk about his win one year after being diagnosed with cancer, and what he will do as sheriff.

"I think the first thing to do is take care of the deputies. And that doesn't always mean financial. We'll push a couple contracts that have been outstanding for five years, we're gonna work with the county on that. But the other thing  is letting them know they're good people, they're honorable people." says Baxter.
