‘Safer Internet Day' calls attention to online dangers

ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) - Tuesday is Safer Internet Day. It's a day designed to call attention to online education and is observed by more than 100 countries.

This year's theme is "Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with you." It's an invitation to foster a positive, digital experience for everyone -- especially for younger users.

With adolescents in mind, Pam Weaver of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children took some time Tuesday afternoon to visit a pair of local schools and help empower students to be safer while surfing the web.

"We talk about some basic risks that they can avoid and how to do that," says Weaver. "It's all about helping them to make good decisions and be good digital citizens."

News 8 is proud to team up with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for Plugged-In Parent to teach parents how to keep their kids safe online.
