Rochester couple home safe after mass shooting in Vegas

Joe Comfort and his wife were in Vegas for a long weekend, when shots rang out

Rochester, N.Y (WROC_TV) - "I was sitting there in the morning [with my hands shaking] and I'm a very calm person,” Joe Comfort said.

Comfort had just survived the deadliest mass shooting in U.S history.

He and his wife were in Vegas staying on the strip for a long weekend, when shots rang out Sunday night.

"We're in Mandalay bay [and] we go to the bar. We order a drink and all the sudden the band stops playing. Everyone's running and screaming and the SWAT team comes in,” he said.

Comfort says he tried to stay calm and eventually got to the safety of his hotel room.

"Then we went on lockdown. Two women were in our room with us. They brought their son for his 21st birthday party. They stayed with us all night until 6a.m.,” he said.

The lockdown lasted through the night.

Then this morning, the coast was clear for his trip back to Rochester.

He described what he saw on his way to the Las Vegas airport.

“There’s nothing out there; desolate. The only thing you saw was cop cars,” Comfort said.

Comfort and his wife said some people they met on vacation ended up being among the hundreds who were shot.

“One of the women, she got shot in the stomach, but she's ok. Some were crawling on their hands and knees and elbows,” he said.

Comfort says the shooting made him a nervous wreck, but he won't let fear keep him home.

"I’m going back to Vegas soon,” Comfort said. “You can't be terrified. You have to live your life.”
