RCSD school could be forced to close

Poor performance

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - Another school in the Rochester City School District is at unfortunate crossroads.

The New York State Education Department announced Kodak Park School 41 could close by end of next year for poor performance.

More than 500 students attend School 41, but come next year that is going to change.

"The time that's been given by the state to act is not enough time to make such a drastic decision and changes for so many kids," Toyian Anderson said.

Anderson's kids are attend schools in the RCSD, and she sits in on every school board meeting.

Tuesday night's agenda was dedicated to managing an aggressive timeline. The New York State Education Department is giving the Board 60 days to choose one of three options.

The first is to put the School 41 into receivership, which means an independent party recommended by the state would take control from the school board. Second, close the school or close then re-open as a new school. The final option is to shut its doors.

Van White, the Board's president, says they will probably ask for more time.

"What I don't think is that an independent receiver or a district can do is provide a transformative initiative in such a short time frame," White said.

While the board debates what to do, parents are also worried. At least 100 students at School 41 have autism.

"It has so many classes of autistic children," Anderson said. "I mean the interruption is going to be so detrimental."

The Board can also choose their own independent receiver, but it must be done within 40 days.

The district's superintendent plans to present her recommendation by the first week of December.
