RBTL presents "The Little Mermaid"

ROCHESTER, NY (WROC-TV) - The Rochester Broadway Theatre League is presenting Disney's "The Little Mermaid" on stage through Sunday, October 29 at the Auditorium Theatre.

Steve Blanchard, who portrays King Triton, and Meredith Inglesby, who portrays Ursula the "sea witch," discussed the musical Wednesday during News 8 at Noon.

The husband and wife are brother and sister in the show. "We work out everything we need to work out on stage!" said Blanchard with a laugh.

The popular movie offers broad appeal on stage. "It's a great show for everyone, whether you're five or 95," Blanchard said. "You can find something in it that appeals to you, whether it's the incredibly catchy music or whether it's the beautiful visuals and all the swimming and the flying, or whether it's the relationship between a father and a daughter. That's essentially the core of the show, is that father/daughter relationship and I'm sure every man in the audience is weeping by the end if they have a daughter."

For Inglesby, stepping into the role of Ursula enables her to give audiences someone to root against. " It's fun to be bad!" she said laughing. "She's anything goes. You can do whatever you want, and be, and say and do within the parameters of the story, obviously. You can be crazy, and I do. I get to get it all out!"

In addition to the story and soaring songs, "The Little Mermaid" is visually inspired. "When they re-envisioned the show, they went to Amsterdam and got together with Paul Rubin who is the aerial choreographer and re-envisioned the entire concept of life under the sea, and the swimming, and the visual concept of Ariel and King Triton, and everyone in this world," said Blanchard. "They tried to create this world that they didn't have before and the foy system of flying really just sent it over the top."

He added flying is fun, just make sure you don't eat anything more than a salad before the show!
