BATAVIA, N.Y. (WROC/WIVB) - 6:20 p.m.
The Thruway is back open after a police incident closed down the road way for hours.
News 8 has learned the suspect involved in the situation, a man in his mid-50's, surrendered and was taken to a nearby hospital.
The highway was closed between Exits 47 and 48 for most of Monday afternoon for the incident.
As rush hours begins, the Thruway remains closed between LeRoy and Batavia.
In an email, the Genesee County Sheriff's Office has issued detour instructions for anyone traveling this afternoon.
In the email, officials ask drivers headed east on the Thruway to take Route 77 to Route 20 East to Route 19 North back to the Thruway.
For westbound traffic, drivers should head the same way in reverse: Route 19 South to Route 20 West, to Route 77 north to rejoin the Thruway at the following exit.
Investigators still haven't detailed the police situation. Traffic is closed in both directions between Exits 47 and 48.
Part of the Thruway is shut down on Monday afternoon due to a police event.
The Thruway is closed from Route 98 (Batavia) to Route 490 (Rochester/LeRoy).
There is police activity at the scene.
“New York State Police assets are on scene continuing to pursue a peaceful resolve,” State police tell our affiliate WIVB.
