Pence pushes new tax plan during Buffalo visit

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - Vice President Mike Pence was met with fanfare Tuesday upon landing in Buffalo.

The first person to greet him off Air Force Two? Republican Congressman Chris Collins.

Pence attended Collins' fundraiser, but he also pushed the White House's plan for tax reform.

"We're going to have real tax simplification here, and 9 out of 10 Americans are going to be able to file their taxes on a single sheet of paper," Pence said.

It's a plan that aims to provide tax relief to the middle class and small business owners.

"Lowering all the marginal rates from seven brackets down to three," Pence said. "First $24,000 in income will pay zero taxes going forward. For working families, there will be an increase in the per child tax credit."

Though one aspect of the reform opponents in New York are taking issue with -- losing the ability to deduct state and local taxes from federal income filings.

In Western New York that averages out to an estimated $12,000 deduction per person.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says if the plan were to pass, it would negatively affect 3.3 million New Yorkers.

"Washington's attempt to cut taxes in other parts of the country by using New York as a piggy bank, and that is something that we could not allow to happen," Cuomo said.

Though Pence promised a crowd of supporters and small business owners Tuesday that the administration is pushing to pass the reforms this year.

Sen. Chuck Schumer released a statement on Pence's visit to Buffalo and the proposed tax plan saying, "Vice President Pence might have visited Buffalo today, but he’s been living in a tax twilight zone, trying to sell the middle class a bill of goods on a plan that harms their interests while rewarding the wealthiest among us."
