Mother of Brittanee Drexel fighting to keep kids safe

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - The case of Brittanee Drexel's disappearance has, once again, quieted, despite the flurry of activity and allegations last year. But, that is not stopping Drexel's mother from pushing ahead to prevent similar tragedies.

In June of 2016, Dawn Pleckan was told by the FBI that her daughter, Brittanee Drexel, was killed.

They didn't have a body, but they appeared to have momentum. Now, a year later...

"We haven't heard anything yet as far as Brittanee's case is concerned we are hoping to hear something soon," said Pleckan.

Hope that Dawn has maintained ever since Brittanee disappeared from Myrtle Beach in 2009. The silence in the case has not silenced her.

Last year she started Brittanee's Little Angels that helps families in similar situations.

"We've been getting quite a few cases in, runaway cases, and we would like to partner up and help law enforcement here with a lot of the cases we get in Rochester," she said.

She joined others hoping to prevent anything like this from happening.

Rochester Councilman Adam McFadden was glad to see Dawn on the panel.

"It has been quite the experience for her now to have her knowledge and experience here to voice some of that is key for us," said McFadden.

Deputy Police Chief Wayne Harris says this topic is often ignored, but is using this opportunity to shed light.

"We've been going around the city educating ourselves on all aspects of community policing, is a component of it, and I think it's important for us to talk about," said Harris.

Dawn encouraged people to rely on what has gotten her through this ordeal- hope.

"If you need to get in touch with somebody to help, give us a call," says Dawn. "We'll be happy to assist you, bit please don't run away because awful things can happen."
