More than 37M fire extinguishers recalled after car fire death

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - More than 37 million fire extinguishers are recalled because can fail to activate in an emergency. At least one death has been blamed on the faulty extinguishers.

The recall includes 142 models and some of these models have been previously recalled for other issues.

"If an extinguisher doesn't work it;s wasting time," said Kelly Cline, Town of Pittsford's fire marshal. "Every second counts when it comes to fire tragedies, fires grow and spread quickly."

Cline said having an extinguisher that doesn't work is like having a false sense of security.

"It's like having a smoke detector that doesn't have batteries in it," said Cline. "You're relying on something that's not going to work."

According to Kidde, the product recall involves two styles -- a plastic handle fire extinguisher and a plastic push button fire extinguisher.

If the units have metal handles or valves they are not included in the recall.

Tim Mackey, vice president of Monroe Extinguishers, said the recalled units can be very dangerous and you need to take them out of service right away.

“When you squeeze thus handle and when the powder comes up through, it’s jamming in the valve so it may or may not come out and if it does, it builds up excessive pressure,” said Mackey. “When it shoots out the front, it's blowing the nozzles off the front of the extinguishers which shoot across the room.”

Mackey has already made calls to Kidde. He will be receiving replacement extinguishers by next week.

As for the commercial accounts, he said they will take the units out of service and put in replacement units temporary until they are replaced.

Kidde will replace any recalled extinguisher with a new one for free, or you can bring your recalled unit to Monroe Extinguishers in Rochester to switch it out locally.
