Man sought in rape-murder of Ohio baby in custody

PITTSBURGH (WROC-TV) - A man wanted on charges of aggravated murder and rape of a 13-month-old girl in Ohio is in custody in Pennsylvania.

Joshua Gurto, 37, was captured in Pittsburgh’s Franklin Park section early Friday morning when an officer spotted him and recognized Gurto by his camouflage and backpack.

Gurto had been on the run for nearly three weeks. U.S. Marshals believe he had been hiding in the woods.

Surveillance photos of Gurto had been posted after U.S. Marshals announced  he may be in the western New York area.

Charges were filed against Gurto after police responded to a call about an unresponsive child at an apartment in Conneaut, northeast of Cleveland, on Oct. 7. The 13-month-old girl had blunt-force injuries to her head and body. She died at a hospital.

Gurto is currently at the Allegheny County Jail where he is awaiting an extradition hearing.
