ROCHESTER, NY (WROC-TV) - The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Western New York is hoping to establish a new Guinness World Record for the most wishes granted in a month this April.
Make-A-Wish Regional Director Mary Jones, the Manager for Marketing and Communications Kristen Henry, and the Chair for the upcoming Power of a Wish Gala Tom Queri discussed that goal and the impact of a wish Monday during News 8 at Noon.
World Wish Day is being celebrated each day this month. "April is the month that we celebrate wishes all month long," said Jones. "It's very powerful and we're looking to grant as many wishes as we can in April."
Henry added, "As part of our campaign through the whole month of April, we're calling it 'Wishes Take Muscle,' we're trying to flex our muscle and show everybody how much effort it takes to grant a wish and how much help we actually need to make that happen. So, at the end of the month, we're really hoping to celebrate by being named the largest wish granting organization in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records, so we're doing everything we can to hit that point."
In addition to being the chair for the Power of a Wish Gala, Queri is a wish donor and volunteer. "Every child is different and every wish unique, so being able to sit with the children and their family and watch them kind of figure out what it is that they wish for, and then help to put it into action is life-changing," he said. "It gives them a chance to be a child and be with their family and to forget their illness, so it really is an amazing experience from beginning to end."
This year's Power of a Wish Gala will be held this Saturday, April 21 at Oak Hill Country Club. "We are celebrating our community and everyone who comes together to make wishes happen," Jones said. "So we're honoring the Greater Rochester Honda Dealers for their involvement throughout the years and their dedication to our mission. And our speaker for the evening, Wish alum Anderson, is speaking about his wish and how he says he can pinpoint the day that changed his life. It's really impactful and gives you a glimpse into the struggles and the internal battles that someone like Anderson faces, or faced, and how his wish helped shape the future of his life."
