Local mom embraces news that Sesame Street will include Muppet with Autism

New character will join the cast in April

Rochester, NY (WROC-TV) - For decades Sesame Street has helped shape young minds while teaching diversity and acceptance. The show hopes to continue that lesson with a new character.

The new Muppet, named Julia, has a form of Autism. Some local groups like AutismUp are very excited about the new character saying it will offer kids a more accurate portrayal of people, families and schools they encounter in real life.

On Monday, News 8 spoke with a local mother whose son has Autism. She too is excited about the new character coming on board.

"It will be interesting to see how Sesame Street will display those characteristics and the difficulties that children with Autism face. I think that they have a bunch of situations to choose and I think that she will be a regular character. I don’t think that it will be a one time thing,” said Kesha Washington.

One in 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism. The new Muppet will make her first appearance on Sesame Street on April 10.
