Local couple receive Coast Guard Foundations National Heroism award

First time an auxiliary unit of Coast Guard has received the award

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - A local couple has been awarded the highest national Coast Guard Award for heroism, after saving seven lives from a distressed boat on Irondequoit Bay.

R

obert and Patti Brody of Irondequoit, members of Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 42, Rochester, receive their award at the Coast Guard Foundation Annual Award Ceremony in New York City.

The Coast Guard Foundation honors Acts of Heroism by Coast Guard Active Duty, Reserve and Auxiliary personnel. This is the first time an Auxiliary unit has received the award. The award was given on behalf of the Commandant, U.S. Coast Guard and recognizes the Brodys' decisive actions to save four adults and three children in July 2016.

Patrolling Irondequoit Bay, the Brodys noticed boat passengers signaling for help in the outlet channel. The boat had lost power and was drifting into the channel rocks. Its engine was dead and there was no way to avoid the crash.

As they pulled the boat away from danger, Patti Brody noticed smoke pouring out of the engine compartment. They immediately removed the seven passengers from the disabled
boat. With all seven safely onboard the Brody patrol boat, Bob Brody radioed Coast Guard Station
Rochester who in turn contacted 911 requesting emergency response.

The Brodys brought the disabled boat to shore and were met by Monroe County Sheriff Marine Unit, and West Webster and Seabreeze fire departments who extinguished the engine's electrical fire.

Foundation film crews have been in Rochester to produce a documentary on the Brodys and their work with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Details about this award are found on the web at www.cgfdn.org.

As Auxiliary volunteers, the Brodys offer their own boat as a Coast Guard facility to patrol Irondequoit Bay and Lake Ontario looking for boaters in need of assistance.

There are over one hundred members if the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Monroe, Wayne and Ontario counties. Information on Rochester Flotilla 42 at www.BoatCourse.org; and nationally at www.cgaux.org.
