Lake Ontario flood concerns rise as levels remain high

LAKE ONTARIO (WROC) - "We're not in a good position going into the spring," said Mike Sullivan, once the former mayor of Sodus Point for over ten years.

His new break wall is ready, but others on the same street did less preparation. "Not everybody's done it, so the water get in."

Rainfall and snow melt was at near record last spring and that led to record water levels over the summer and fall of 2017. On top of that a new plan (Plan 2014) to regulate water allows levels to stay at a higher level for a longer period of time. That means limiting outflow.

"Our limitation on the outflow is a combination of water levels downstream which are being backed up because of the ice, as well as right behind the dam because we're releasing so much water," said Frank Sciremammano, who works with the International Joint Commission (IJC). He says no matter the regulations, in just a few weeks the fate of water levels could be determined.

"As we get to the first week of March we'll have a better idea, we'll see how the weather conditions are holding," said Sciremammano. Shipping lanes is also a consideration on how to regulate water levels. Flow into the St. Lawrence is highly dependent on ice coverage on the river along with lake levels closer to the northern shores as they can be just as impacted as those on the southern shores.

Bottom line, says Sciremammano, should be preparation for the future. "They should in general be prepared for more extreme levels than we've experienced in the past."

"I don't think we'll see a repeat of last year, but remember, the lake could be two feet below it's peak of last year, and we still have problems on the lake shore," said Sciremammano.
