House on the edge of Lake Ontario in Sodus Point demolished

SODUS POINT, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - A lakeshore summer home in Sodus Point impacted by rising Lake Ontario levels was demolished Friday.

John Capezzuto, the homeowner, made the decision to tear it down after months of erosion.

"It's tough to see it go down since we've used it as our own cottage," Capezzuto said.

Capezzuto's home was literally hanging on the edge of an embankment for months, which forced him recently to push the house back hundreds of feet. But Lake Ontario had a mind of its own and eroded his property, leaving him no choice but to tear it down.

"It happened in a six-month period, everything was gone and in front of the building, just nothing left," Capezzuto said. "The trees and everything just dropped into the lake."

Many memories have been created here at this house, but he is looking ahead to a new reality.

"We are going to rebuild on the land and have another cottage," Capezzuto said

Capezzuto said he's lucky this isn't his primary home, but it was definitely disappointing to see it go.
