Hope Hall holiday sale

ROCHESTER, NY (WROC-TV) - Hope Hall School in Gates will host two opportunities for you to purchase your hand made wooden holiday gifts this December.

The first sale will be held this Saturday, December 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Hope Hall, 1612 Buffalo Road.

The second sale opportunity will be held Friday to Sunday, December 15-17, at The Mall at Greece Ridge during holiday business hours in front of the Macy's entrance.

Sister Diana Dolce, who founded Hope Hall in 1994, and Hope Hall senior Andrea Mateo discussed the woodworking program and the sale Tuesday during News 8 at Noon.

"We started our high school seven years ago now," said Sister Diana. "Before we started we went to the Gates-Chili Chamber of Commerce and got the names of some people, businesses in the area, and asked them what kinds of skills would they like workers to have, because we wanted to do the right thing by our students and - to a person - they said, Sister, we can teach the hard skills. We can teach the welding. We can teach the plumbing. We can't teach the soft skills which are collaboration, problem solving, working together with teammates, respect, handling machines with care. And so, we came back and thought how do we address the soft skills, the math and the science, and we decided, we could only have one program, let's go with woodworking because that would be something that our students could take home and take pride in, as well as learning all of those soft skills that they need."

Several of the wooden items made at Hope Hall were displayed during our conversation, including a beautiful wooden chair made by Mateo, who explained her process. "It all started off with drawings. We all start off with mechanical drawings and we scale it down. We all have to complete a drawing before we actually start the construction of it. Honestly, I feel very proud. I'm proud of myself. I walked into the classroom not thinking I would be able to do all of that, and just seeing it, it's amazing!"

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Hope Hall woodworking program. "We don't want to charge our students additional fees," Sister Diana said. She also share how learning the soft skills has opened up the minds of her students, including Mateo. "Andrea is going to be an LPN, and one of the things that she said while we were out in the hallway was that learning how to do these things that she didn't think she could do is what gave her the courage to go ahead and apply to be an LPN. She's going to be going to REOC to be doing that very thing."
