ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) - Highland Hospital is now the first hospital in the Rochester area to offer nitrous oxide to help moms deal with labor pains.
Last year, News 8 first told you the hospital was testing out using the gas.
In a release, hospital officials say the gas, often referred to as laughing gas, will be administered mixed with oxygen. Mothers will be able to control their use and will hold the mask themselves.
“Nitrous oxide is another option moms can use for pain relief during labor and is especially helpful for women who may not be able to have an epidural or may not want one,” said Steven Finkelstein, M.D., Chief of Anesthesiology for Highland Hospital. “This is an example of how Highland is continuously bringing the very best in cutting edge technology to our patients.”
Officials say Strong Memorial Hospital will soon also offer nitrous oxide for labor starting in the next few weeks.
The hospital said the decision to add the gas at the hospital was made by a coalition of anesthesiologists, midwives, obstetricians/gynecologists, pediatricians, and nurses working together.
