ROCHESTER, NY (WROC-TV) - Geva Theatre Center presents "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" on stage through March 12.
Actress Brigitt Markusfeld, who plays Christina Drayton in the production, discussed the stage adaption of the Academy Award winning film Wednesday on News 8.
In the show, Drayton's daughter Joanna surprises her liberal, white parents when she brings home John, her African-American fiance, to meet them. She also invites John's disapproving parents, and a clash of generations and races ensues.
"While it follows the basic story line of the movie, it's a much deeper, fuller story than the movie is," said Markusfeld. "We think that we have made a lot of progress, I think. But, I think that we have so much farther to go, and everything that's in this play is still relevant today."
"Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" is celebrating it's 50th anniversary this year. It's a co-production of the Indiana Repertory Theatre and Geva Theatre and comes to Rochester after a successful four week run in the midwest. "When we first started the play, we talked about how we have become desensitized as people, as a society, and that hopefully this play re-sensitizes us to issues that are happening right now, Markusfeld said. "So, I think that's the main thing. It's gives us a chance to think, and then re-think."
