Good Samaritan stops to help people trapped after crash on 390

Leroy Taggart says he wasn't trying to play the hero. He just wanted to help.

Rochester, N.Y (WROC_TV) - Until he saw it, Leroy Taggart didn't know how he react in a life-and-death situation.

"We're going southbound towards Dansville [and] as we're driving, I see a car upside down,” he said.

Taggart pulled over and ran up to the car.

"I notice a hand sort of out of the car," he said.

It was a woman, trapped.

Taggart says he ran back to his car for something to get her out with.

“I take the crowbar, I hit the window and boom, it breaks. Then I cut the seatbelt.”

Taggart got her to safety, then tried helping two people trapped in a second car. But it was too late.

"They’re gone. There's nothing I can do,” he said.

Taggart says it happened so fast, he was one of the first on scene.

Soon after, State Police got there and he learned the woman he helped was one of their own.

"She tells the officer, I'm a state trooper.”

Taggart would have had no way of knowing when he jumped out of his car, but learned later, she was on duty driving northbound.

The other car with two people inside was southbound and crossed the median for an unknown reason.

“The only thing I’m thinking is, I gotta save these people. I can't let these people die. They need help.”

The trooper's name, along with the names of the victims, have not been released.
