Rochester, NY (WROC-TV) - A Flood Warning is now in effect for the Genesee River at Avon and the Oatka Creek at Garbutt. Recent rainfall, which amounted to more than an inch last night, has caused our local waterways to rise with some coming close to spilling over their banks.
As of 9 a.m. Friday, the Genesee River at Avon had a water level of 32.9 feet and rising. Flood stage is 33.0 feet. The river will crest near 33.3 feet this afternoon causing water to overflow.
UPDATE: This Flood Warning is in effect now through 9 p.m. tonight.
Fortunately, the overflow will be minor impacting mainly farm land and causing little damage.
Residents along the Oatka Creek are also keeping an eye on water levels there. Earlier this morning the creek stage was at 5.3 feet and rising. The river was expected to rise to near 6.0 feet, which is considered to be the stage in which the creek begins to flood.
Those who live along the Oatka Creek should expect minor flooding to take place later this afternoon and tonight. Once again, the targets here will mainly be farmland areas and also some homes in low lying areas with basements.
It should be noted that residents along Lake Ontario are also monitoring water levels due to recent rain. Stay tuned to News 8 for the very latest on this situation and for any developments that may take place along the Lake Ontario shoreline.
