Downpours cause flooding in Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - Heavy rain overnight and Monday morning left several streets, yards, and parks in the Rochester area flooded. Drivers had to navigate through or around standing water. Even some busy highways were impacted during the morning commute.

Angora Drive in Irondequoit was completely flooded. Crews pumped up some of the water, but it only did but so much.

The steady rain that fell Sunday night and Monday turned many streets into rivers. On Lakeshore Boulevard, cars plowed through almost knee deep water.

Police shut down a portion of Culver Road as crews worked to unclog drains from falling leaves. Over by Highland Avenue, police closed the ramp to 590 south while crews worked to clear the flooded roadway.

"The weather has been so dry recently that this influx of rain out of nowhere, it's tough for the ground to handle it because everything is so hard," Lt. Ken Stavalone said. "The systems are getting overtaxed as they would normally."

But the weather isn't just impacting streets -- also people's homes. Homeowners on Maybrooke Road in Brighton discovered nearly two inches of rain in their basement after their sump pump stopped working.

"We try to always advise homeowners to have an extra sump pump handy and ready to go and make sure all of your routine maintenance is completed," Lt. Stavalone said.

The Brighton Fire Chief said falling leaves could also cause more flooding this season as they clog up some of the drains.
