Deputies confirm bodies found in vehicle were missing Perinton couple

CHARLOTTE, NY (WROC) - UPDATE (Friday 3 p.m.): Deputies have positively identified the bodies found in a submerged vehicle in the river as Robert and Mary Ross -- the Perinton couple reported missing last week.

Family members have been notified, deputies write. The circumstances that put the vehicle into the water are not yet known.

In a statement, deputies say, "The Monroe County Sheriff's Office offers its condolences to the family of Robert and Mary Ross."

UPDATE (1:45 p.m.)  Two bodies were found in the front seats of a the missing Perinton couple's vehicle that was pulled from the Genesee River on Thursday.

Robert and Mary Ross have been missing since late last month. Their son told News 8 his mother's phone last pinged on January 30 in Charlotte.

Deputies have spent the last week searching Charlotte, the river and along the lake for the couple. Wednesday afternoon, deputies discovered a vehicle near the boat launch near the Pelican's Nest. Thursday morning, divers were able to enter the water and confirm it was the couple's car.

Tow crews were able to pull the vehicle out of water and mud. Once getting the SUV out, deputies say they found two bodies inside. Still, deputies can't fully confirm the bodies belong to the missing couple. However, the couple's son says he is heading back from Boston where he lives.

The circumstances that led up to the vehicle headed into the water are not known.

UPDATE (12:15 p.m.) A blue tarp has been placed over the vehicle for a missing couple that has been pulled from the Genesee River. The medical examiner has also arrived on scene -- indicating there is a body inside the vehicle.

Deputies say the vehicle is a Kia Sorrento with vanity license plate matching the missing couple's vehicle.

UPDATE (11:05 a.m.): Deputies have confirmed the vehicle found in the Genesee River is the missing couple's vehicle.

Divers were able to identify the vehicle and the couple's vanity plate that reads "BLUSTERY." It's not clear if there are any bodies inside the SUV.

Crews are still working to remove the vehicle from the water. A tow truck has arrived at the boat launch.

(ORIGINAL STORY): Deputies are working Thursday morning to recover the vehicle found in the Genesee River as crews searched for a missing Perinton couple.

Investigators believe the car is likely the couple's vehicle, but as of Wednesday hadn't been able to get into the water to verify that. It's also not clear if there are bodies inside the vehicle.

Robert and Mary Ross were reported missing last week after Robert missed appointments for cancer treatment. Their son tells us his mother's phone last pinged in the Charlotte area on January 30.

Monroe County deputies have spent the last week searching for the couple, using helicopter, drones, sonar and divers to aide efforts.

Divers are working Thursday morning to tow the vehicle from the water from the area of a boat launch near the Pelican's Nest restaurant. The car may be stuck in mud which would hinder recovery efforts.
