Deadline approaching for Monroe County property owners to challenge assessments

'Grievance Day' is Tuesday, May 23

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - Do you think your property assessment is a lot higher than what it is worth? Now is your time to say something about it as next Tuesday, May 23 is 'Grievance Day' -- the deadline to file grievances in Monroe County.

Property taxes have stayed pretty stable in the Town of Greece, according to Greece Town Assessor Richard Baart.

"Last year our taxes went down a little bit so hopefully when the budget comes out we'll have that good news for the Town of Greece as well," said Baart.

But before filing a grievance, local assessors say to do your research on what your property is worth since the assessors already have their method.

"We use something called a mass appraisal and in looking at all the properties, we look at trends, and through the sales that happen in the town, we get a pretty good idea of where things are going," said Baart.

If you think your assessment was a bad representation of your property, you can fight it by filing a grievance.

"Come in and talk to the assessor," said Baart. "We're really easy to talk to. We're here every day of the week, and probably, we can help them avoid that long process."
